VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT AND AWARDS


DEAR COACHES, BOARD, DIVISION COORDINATORS, COORDINATORS, COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND MANAGERS:

 

Save the date for our 2026 Volunteer Appreciation Night scheduled at take place at The Tool Shed, #9, 801 - 30st Street NE on Sunday, June 21 from 4:30 pm -8:30 pm.   An invitation will be sent out during the month of May  looking for RSVP'S to this event and providing further details.     At this time we will be handing out our Volunteer Awards and celebrating our volunteers from 2026 with some dinner, snacks and fun for all.

2026 HORNET VOLUNTEER AWARDS

 

We are reaching out to our members to vote on the following Hornets Awards for 2026:

 

  • 1.   Sandy Bennie Trophy - Award of Excellence (Player, Coach, Manager or Director
  • 2.   Coach of the Year;
  • 3.   Manager of the Year;
  • 4.   Volunteer of the Year; and
  • 5.   Team Spirit Award

Below is the criteria for each of these awards.  Through the link provided - AWARD VOTING FORM (AVAILABLE SHORTLY) - Please let us know who you want to recognize for each of these awards.    

Purpose:
To recognize an individual who exemplifies the highest level of excellence within the lacrosse club through their character, leadership, and contributions on and off the field. This prestigious award honors the spirit of dedication and service that elevates the entire lacrosse community.

Criteria:
Nominees should demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

  • Commitment:
    Shows unwavering dedication to the Hornets’s mission and consistently goes above and beyond their role. Demonstrates reliability, consistency, and a strong work ethic throughout the season or over multiple years.

  • Positive Role Model:
    Serves as a source of inspiration for players, peers, and the wider community. Upholds the values of respect, accountability, and integrity in all interactions.

  • Leadership:
    Leads by example and brings people together with a unifying, motivating presence. Positively influences team culture and promotes collaboration, inclusion, and development at all levels.

  • Sportsmanship:
    Embodies the spirit of fair play and mutual respect, both in competition and in everyday conduct. Models humility in victory and grace in defeat.

  • Volunteerism:
    Willingly contributes time and effort beyond assigned duties to support club operations, events, and initiatives. Offers help wherever it’s needed without seeking recognition.

  • Spirit and Enthusiasm:
    Displays a passionate, positive attitude that uplifts others and enhances the experience of everyone involved with the club. Contributes to building a fun, supportive, and welcoming environment.

  • Impact on the Community:
    Actively contributes to the growth and outreach of lacrosse within the broader community. May include mentoring, advocacy, organizing events, or initiatives that promote the sport and Hornet values.

Eligibility:
Open to any player, coach, manager, or director affiliated with the club who has made an exceptional contribution during the current season or over a sustained period.


Manager of the Year

Purpose: To recognize a team manager who has gone above and beyond to support their team and the overall operation of the Hornet club.

Criteria:

  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational and communication skills.

  • Proactively supports coaches, players, and families throughout the season.

  • Handles logistics, scheduling, and administrative duties with consistency and reliability.

  • Contributes positively to team morale and club culture.

  • Manages challenges or conflicts effectively and professionally.

  • Willingly steps in to assist others and goes beyond the basic duties of the role.


Coach of the Year

Purpose: To honor a coach who exemplifies excellence in teaching, mentoring, and leading athletes in the sport of lacrosse.

Criteria:

  • Demonstrates strong leadership, strategic knowledge, and passion for the game.

  • Develops players' skills, sportsmanship, and confidence.

  • Fosters a respectful and inclusive team environment.

  • Communicates clearly and constructively with players, parents, and fellow staff.

  • Embodies fair play, ethical conduct, and club values at all times.

  • Makes a notable contribution to team and/or club success during the season.


Volunteer of the Year

Purpose: To celebrate an individual who has generously given their time and energy in support of Calgary Hornets.

Criteria:

  • Shows outstanding dedication through volunteer service.

  • Takes initiative and consistently follows through on tasks or responsibilities.

  • Positively impacts the Hornets through behind-the-scenes work or community involvement.

  • Demonstrates a team-first attitude and willingness to help wherever needed.

  • Serves as an ambassador for the Hornet’s mission and value

Team Spirit Award

Presented to the team that is most consistently visible and actively engaged throughout the season.

Purpose:   To recognize the team that best exemplifies pride, positivity and community involvement throughout the season.  This award celebrates teams that go beyond the game, demonstrating a strong sense of unity, support and representation of the Hornets Lacrosse Club.

Criteria:

      *  Cheering for fellow Hornet teams at games and events

      *  Mentorship, with older athletes supporting and encouraging younger players during practices and team interactions

      *   Community involvement, such as volunteer activities while proudly wearing Hornet swag

      *   Family and parent engagement, with visible support shown through team colors (orange and black) at games and events

      *   Team bonding activities outside of lacrosse that strengthen connections and build a positive team culture.

A key component to this award is visibility and representation, with teams encouraged to capture and share their spirit through sharing photos, videos and posts to the Calgary Hornets Lacrosse social media,highlighting the team's engagement, creativity and pride iin being part of the Calgary Hornets community.
